The CCSi ASTM D1329 (38mm) Specimen Cutting Die cuts a narrow rectangular strip for the Temperature Retraction (TR) test — a low-temperature test that measures how rubber behaves as it warms up from a stretched, frozen state, not a thermal-conductivity or insulation test. The specimen gets elongated, locked, chilled until its elasticity is effectively suspended, then released and allowed to retract freely as temperature climbs at a steady rate, with length measured at set intervals along the way.

ASTM D1329 specifies three narrow-strip lengths — 25, 38, and 51 mm — with identical end tabs across all three; which length you need depends on the material’s expected elongation and the physical limits of your specimen rack. This is the 38 mm version, a middle option between the standard 25 mm die and the longer 51 mm die.

Two temperature points matter most in this test: TR10 (10% retraction), which correlates with brittleness point in similar polymers, and TR70 (70% retraction), which correlates with low-temperature compression set. The gap between them widens with increasing crystallization, giving formulators a useful indicator when screening compounds for cold-weather service.
