Product Description

CCSi manufactures these high quality UltraLife Specimen Cutting Dies to measure the properties of adhesives (rubber cements) that may be applied in a plastic or fluid state, and are manufactured from natural rubber; reclaimed rubber; synthetic elastomers; or compositions of these materials, as described in ASTM D816 ‘Standard Test Methods for Rubber Cements’.

The tests provide standard procedures for evaluating important properties of adhesives ordinarily classed as rubber cements.

The method consists of nine individual tests, five of which do not require specimen preparation using cutting dies. Three, of the remaining four, employ the Method B adhesion shear specimen described below.

The Adhesion Test is divided in to three parts:

  • Test Method A — Adhesion Strength in Tension;
  • Test Method B — Adhesion Strength in Shear;
  • Test Method C — Adhesion Strength by Stripping Method.

Adhesion Test Method A employs the procedure described in ASTM D429 ‘Standard Test Methods for Rubber Property — Adhesion to Rigid Substrates’, for which CCSi the appropriate mold. Please refer to the CCSi ASTM D429 UltraLife Mold pages for more information.

Adhesion Test Method B requires rectangular test specimens measuring 25 x 125 mm (1 x 5 inch). While Adhesion Test Method C requires rectangular test specimens measuring 25 x 150 mm (1 x 6 inch). These are, a bit confusingly, regarded as Type 1 (lapped configuration) and Type 2 (sandwich arrangement) specimens.

CCSi UltraLife Specimen Dies: Quality Manufacturing Fill 118 Copy 1 Created with Sketch.

CCSi UltraLife specimen cutting dies are manufactured from homogenous, solid, high carbon content A2 tool steel. Each undergoes multi-axis precision grinding and conventional, plunge, or wire EDM (Electrical Discharge Machining) processes … producing a world-class, close tolerance die.

Precision grinding and EDM processes ensure true parallelism and multi-plane dimensional accuracy. The quality of materials, design, and engineering serve to provide the highest specimen quality possible, over an extended service life.

Where highly technical manufacturing techniques and processes end … old-world craftsmanship begins!

CCSi UltraLife specimen cutting dies are individually serialized, hand-honed, and mirror polished. A protective coating of industrial enamel is applied to the non-cutting surfaces before undergoing a rigorous final inspection.

Each UltraLife specimen cutting die includes a detailed final report and certification to the applicable standard, traceable to NIST, and compliant with ISO 9001:2000 and ISO/IEC 17025. The specimen dies are placed in a plastic, blow-molded, ‘clam shell’ style case with a foam lining to protect the die during transport and storage.
