ASTM D1052 describes the Ross Type Rubber Flexing Apparatus which is designed for measuring the cut growth in rubber vulcanizates or synthetic elastomers by subjecting specifically prepared test specimens to repeated bend flexing.

The Ross Flexing Apparatus operates by clamping one end of the test specimen to an arm while the pierced end is placed between two rollers which permits a free bending movement.

During each test cycle, the pierced area of the specimen is bent freely over a 10 mm Ø rod through a 90º angle. The growth of the cut, propagated by the pierced area, is then measured, either as a function of the actual final length of the cut over a specific number of cycles, or as the number of cycles required to attain a specific percentage of the growth of the cut.

The Emerson — Ross Type Rubber Flexing Apparatus Model AR2 can test 6 pair of specimens simultaneously. The specimen thickness can range from 3.175 — 6.35 mm (0.125 — 0.500 in). The number of cycles, the frequency of which is 100 cycles per minute, during the test is recorded by a digital counter. The Model AR2 is completely self contained and of a size suitable for benchtop use.

The Model AR6 Emerson — Ross Type Rubber Flexing Apparatus is designed for subnormal temperature tests. The apparatus is identical to the Model AR2, except that those components which are contained within the chamber are manufactured of high chromium content stainless steel to prevent the oxidizing effects of condensation.

The electric gear drive motor is mounted outside of the environmental chamber and connected to the apparatus using a sealed flexible coupling device. The environmental chamber is capable of sustaining temperatures as low as — 22.2 Cº (— 40 Fº) over the entire period of the test.

The Model AR6 conforms to ASTM D1052 and FED CCC-C-501A (coated cloth). Additionally, instruments for conforming to ASTM D572 and ASTM D573 are also available.
